These classes have workshop in the title because each class will be delving into learning specific techniques. However, the beauty of them is that you can pick and choose which specific classes that you want to take based on your own interests and schedule. No long term commitment is required. However, it is highly recommended that you have some previous watercolor experience or have taken a beginning watercolor class before. pARTiculars has several beginning watercolor class options available through this or other instructors.

NOTE: In this class you will NOT complete an entire painting, as each class will be instruction on specific techniques that can be used in your own individual future paintings. See my 2-hour Landscape class if you want a watercolor painting start to finish.

•  Workshop 1Northern Lights –  We will be using a combination of wet on wet and wet on dry techniques to paint the northern lights (with a little bit of landscape in the background) from start to finish.

•  Workshop 2: Bokeh – What is Bokeh? It is a visual out-of-focus look of a photographic image. Think of an image in focus in the foreground at night with out-of focus twinkling lights in the background. We will duplicate this look with watercolor. It is a fun and easy way to either create an abstract painting or add a soft background to a subject in sharper focus in the foreground.

•  Workshop 3: Clouds/Sky – In my beginning watercolor class I teach how to paint some simple puffy clouds. This class will be an expansion using other techniques to paint clouds and skies for dramatic effect.  This is a repeat of a class from the fall of 2023.

•  Workshop 4: Color Mixing – Mountains/Atmospheric perspective – In this class you will learn how to paint a soft focus mountain range in the distance while learning about atmospheric perspective. More mountain painting techniques will be taught if time will allow.

•  Workshop 5: Mountain Lakes – In this class you will learn how to paint a mountain lake with reflections, sparkles and reflections. Did you know you can use candle wax for a sparkling surface on water? Lessons on perspective will be included so that the lake doesn’t ‘float’ on the page.

•  Workshop 6: Grasses/Fields/Mixing Greens. This class was taught in the fall, but I had so much fun I’m teaching it again if anyone missed it or wants to take the class again. A big beginning mistake in watercolor (or painting in general) is using greens straight out of the palette. I will teach you how to make natural looking grassy fields and realistic grass painting techniques.

•  Workshop 7: Summer Trees – In this there may be a repeat of some of the mixing greens lessons taught in Workshop 6, in order to get realistic looking trees but I will try to keep it short because there is a lot to learn in this class. Techniques will be taught in how to paint trees in the background, in the foreground, how to paint a leafy tree without painting each leaf, painting branches, etc

•  Workshop 8: – Bees! – This one will be a fun class! We will learn how to paint large bumblebees that can fill a page,  abstract, fuzzy bees, and smaller bees that can be used to add to your floral watercolors. Like the other classes we will try to cram in as many different techniques as we can in the class. Bring your iridescent paints if you have them. I will provide some as well.
